
Julie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18th, 2000) is an American singer-actress whose career spans more than 40 years. A torch singer renowned for her smooth, sultry contralto vocals, London recorded over thirty albums of pop and jazz standards between 1955 and 1969. Inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001 was her performance of "Cry Me a River" which she had included on her debut album. London was nominated in 1974 for the Golden Globe Award as a actor for her role in Emergency! of Dixie McCall. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she began her career as an actress. London's acting career lasted for 35 years and began around 1944, when she appeared in films. These included roles as the lead female character in a variety of westerns. She also appeared with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) as well as Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). She signed a recording contract with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This was the beginning of her professional music career. Her last studio album was released in 1969. Her success continued as the female star role in the role of Dixie McCall on the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) In the show, she was portrayed by her husband Bobby Troup. The show was produced by her ex-husband Jack Webb.
